In Comrade X, you were allowed to express your intellect, but under an assumed male name:

Thompson: You don’t look like Theodore to me

Hedy: I was named at the Workers’ Council

Thompson: Somebody didn’t have his glasses on.

Hedy: It is not glasses.  It is the law.  Streetcars must by driven by males.

In order to save you from an inevitable ideologue’s fate of the firing squad, Thompson agrees to a hasty marriage to Theodore so as to spirit you out of the country.

One glitch to getting hitched, however. When you tell the functionary that your name is Theodore he refuses to marry you to Thompson. You argue with him in what may be the earliest film version of a defense of gay marriage.

Finally relenting, you take on the name of a Russian martyr whose feet were burned off. Your only desire is to one day be worthy of her!

In the film, however, you finally get the last laugh–and long delayed recognition–by commandeering the General’s tank!

And now you know the answer to 41 Across!
